Re: PvP vs. FvF
Mythic calls it PvP when they are describing a general scenario where players are able to attack other players. For example, players can duel in DAoC, AND they can perform RvR. Mythic calls both of these activities PvP.
When they are talking about players fighting each other on opposing factions, they call it RvR, which is of course a subset of PvP. Why would they call it PvP, which also includes dueling? Dueling is a very small aspect of the gameplay in DAoC, and the majority of PvP is RvR, so of course RvR is what you will most often see discussed. About the VN boards. Yes, the mods there are usually overzealous, and the ToS is overly strict. But you just have to know that going in, and not participate if you don't want to follow the VN rules. It's pointless arguing with the mods. They can't make any real independent decisions, they just do what they're told, and you can't talk to the people that are telling them what to do, so there you have it. |

Re: PvP vs. FvF
It's not true PvP when you can't switch sides and your enemies are defined for you.
VN boards are a shithole. The mods have become even more repressive over the years.

Re: PvP vs. FvF
Quote:
The problem is, there is no such term in game development as "TRUE" PvP. There's just PvP. Which includes dueling, FFA, RvR, FvF, etc. So, if you mean free for all PvP, you can attack anyone anywhere, just say FFA PvP and everyone will know what you're talking about. Nobody knows what "true" PvP is. On the other hand if you just say PvP, you could be talking about dueling, or any kind of PvP. Here's another way to look at it: There could be FFA PvP AND you could still have Realms. So, there's side A and side B. They each have cities, and you pick whether you will join side A or side B when you start the game. Most of the fighting is between side A and side B, however, you can attack anyone (it's FFA PvP). Even though you belong to side A and cannot switch to side B, you can still attack your own team if you want to. You could fight other side A players even if you are on side A, but you cannot switch to side B. On the other hand, you could have a game that does NOT have FFA PvP, but you could switch sides. For example, there is no side A or side B to join when you start the game, but you can make your own sides by forming guilds. The players then form guilds X, Y, and Z. However, you cannot attack a guild member, meaning if you are in guild X you cannot attack guild X members. But you can quit guild X and join guild Z (assuming they will have you). There are two issues. Who can you attack in PvP? Everyone, only the opposing side? And the other issue is, can you make up your own sides, or do you have to join a side? You can mix and match these features. Just because you have one, doesn't mean you have to have the other. http://www.mmorpgmaker.com |

Re: PvP vs. FvF
Deyth is just arguing semantics. You have to adjust to the way people percieve PvP. To the vast majority of MMO gamers it's catagorized into FFA, RvR, FvF, etc. as Gillvane said (I would never call "dueling" PvP, that's blasphemy). So, since most people view it that way, use terms they'll understand.
